Persian Mulberry/Shatoot/Harvest:June-August

As far as I am concerned, there is only one true Persian Mulberry and we have it available for purchase. Only recently have gourmet chefs discovered what we have always thought about this fruit, and that is the Persian Mulberry is just about the most delicious berry/cherrylike fruit known, period. Granted that an opinion of what is considered a desirable flavor is by its own nature, subjective to various palates. That being said this fruit has quite a following. Once folks try it for the first time or try it again for the first time in many years bringing about a childhood memory growing up in the middle east for example, usually the flavor is not forgotten. This 1 3/4" long x 3/4" wide seedless purple fruit has it all, juicy, high sugar, and just enough acidity to balance it. Sugar and acidity are obvious components of flavor but this fruits complexity is enough to hold its own regardless, and it has strong aromatics to boot. Can you tell I like this fruit. This is a deciduous tree to 15'(unlike the Pakistani Mulberry which can attain a height of 40') or less if you prune it well in winter. It grows good inland as well as along the coast. You can purchase the fruit at the Santa Monica Farmers Market(that is if you get there before the chefs do )for $20.00lb. or you can grow your own at home
