Acerola/Barbados Cherry ( Highest Vitamin C ) Harvest: March-December
This sweet tropical cherry does not need winter chill to produce fruit. In various climates throughout S.California it can produce multiple crops per year! The 'Manoa Sweet' variety that we carry has large fruit to 1" and is ready to fruit when only 3' tall. Grow this shrub in full sun and in soil that has good drainage. Average height to 8' and 6' spread. After first year of growth, the Acerola should be well established and nitrogen based fertilizers should be used only once a year. Our display Barbados Cherry that we have planted in the ground does not receive any fertilizer what so ever and produces heavy crops every year. All we do is give it a thick layer of mulch (4"), thats it! As an added benefit to the grower, this fruit is reported to have the highest concentration of vitamin c of any known fruit to man! So what do you think? I think, buy this plant, grow it, eat the fruit and be healthy. Well, that's just me. Enjoy.
